Chilean pulpwood markets: Shortages set the stage for a rise in wood prices

The start of Arauco’s Mapa project in 2023, with its nearly 1.6 million tonnes of pulp capacity in Horcones, expanded domestic pulpwood log demand. Over the next three years, China’s expected surge in new pulp capacity will necessitate a massive increase in traded woodchips, with Chile well situated as a potential source of supply.

However, several questions remain:

– How will Chilean domestic pulpwood log prices trend in the next few years?

– Will Chile continue to be an important woodchip supplier?

– Where else might China go for wood fiber?
