Romain Guillaume Billy
Postdoctoral Fellow- Department of Energy and Process Engineering
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Romain Billy is a postdoctoral researcher within the Industrial Ecology Program at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. In his research, he is developing two main types of models relevant to the aluminium industry: 1. Material Flow Analysis and Stock Dynamics models to monitor and simulate global metal cycles and their emissions over time, with a focus on aluminium and battery materials. These models explore in particular the role of aluminium as an enabler of the green transition in the transport and energy sectors and enable to design future scenarios for the impacts of this transition on primary demand, resource availability, scrap generation, and recycling technologies. 2. Digital twins of primary and secondary aluminium plants. These models improve the monitoring and reporting of material flows and emissions in industrial facilities. They are also used to explore the potential of systemic emission reduction strategies at plant level, such as increasing material and energy efficiency or replacing fossil fuels by hydrogen or electricity in heating processes. Romain holds a PhD and a MSc in Industrial Ecology from NTNU and a MSc in Engineering from the Ecole Centrale de Nantes.
